San Pedro de Atacama is a small town near the Andean mountain range in the north of Chile and its geographical location is precisely what makes it so special. The different walks you will be able to do vary from rivers and lagoons to volcanoes and giant dunes. Here are some of our suggestions to visit the valleys.
Valley of the Moon & The Mars Valley
A few kilometers from San Pedro are situated two valleys constantly visited by tourists and locals : the Valley of the Moon and the Mars Valley are geological formations issued from the Tertiary Age which escarpments reveal a landscape from another planet. They can be visited with a private vehicle or by bike until 5pm with the relevant authorization and/or by tour until 7pm.
Rainbow Valley
A little further on the road 23 you will find the turnoff towards the Rainbow Valley, another one of the very unique geological formations. Its tricolor stained mountain, caused by its mineral composition, is framed into a valley of escarpments and makes it one the most surrealistic and astonishing landscape.
